KDE talk in London, Ontario, February 3rd

Jan
11

Hola folks - long time, no posts. It's not like I haven't been talking, it's just that I've been spouting my mouth off on non-KDE topics elsewhere on the internet. Anyway, looking forward to Camp KDE (thanks to the KDE e.V. for supporting my student-ass with some funding). We have a contest winner for the Camp KDE Be Free contest, who we'll announce as part of the Camp KDE event. Looking forward to meeting him there.

Akademy!

Jun

(Apologies to Ivan for hotlinking to his copy.)

Currently in Frankfurt - flying RyanAir to Tampere in the morning. Looking forward to seeing my peeps all the while keeping myself busy with the various writing duties that surround Akademy. I get to show off my farmer tan... rock farmer, that is. Spent too much time in German quarries this week.

Yay!

Looking for Sun Raster Images

Jan
27

Hiya folks. In one of my first real forays into the C++ side of KDE, I've been working on adding support for a relatively obscure image format that I encounter in the geophysics world occasionally: the Sun Raster Image format. So, I got annoyed at having to open the files with eog instead of my preferred KDE applications, and decided that adding this format would be a good training exercise for a pythonista working in C++. That said, I've already got a working plugin for loading some of the basic images in the format, but I need lots of test images to throw at it to see if it breaks.

Camp KDE coverage summary

Jan
27

Hi guys, I was preparing this summary of blogs and other coverage of Camp KDE to forward to our sponsors to show the activity occurring at the event. I figured I'd share it with the planet, if you folks are interested. If blogging is a measure of productivity, we certainly set the bar high. :)

Camp KDE a fini

Jan
24

Well folks, Camp KDE is all wrapped up. Hopefully Jeff finds time to upload some videos real-soon-now (TM) for those of you that could not make it to the talks.

Anyway, just wanted to mention a few things that I thought were great and things that could have been better. It's sort of important for me to pay attention to this, since I kept telling people I'd try to host Camp KDE next year in Toronto.

Commentry from Camp KDE Be Free Contest winner

Jan
20

Well, CampKDE has been ongoing and, as you can see from planetkde, very well received by those that attended. One of the things we did was run a contest where we flew one KDE community member to Camp KDE as part of the "Camp KDE Be Free Contest". The winner this year was James Cain, who has helped to improve open standards and acceptance at his place of work through open source software (generally) and KDE (more specifically). Even their internal websites work with Konq now, as well as other standards complaint browsers, rather than (previously) only IE.

A couple of bumps on the road

Well, I guess I'll bump some of the great responses to the branding strategy with this, but I thought it was worth blogging a little.

Camp KDE contest

Nov
22

Just in case some people are only reading planetKDE, and not the dot, I thought that I'd reproduce this article here (in order to boost the number of submissions, which is currently zero after three days, as far as I can tell - good odds for submitters):

Do you have a special story about how you or your organization has used KDE to break free from proprietary software? If so, enter the Camp KDE "Be Free" Contest and tell us your story!

Marketing Sprint: The Juggernaut Strikes Back

Nov
14

Blog is a funny word. If you repeat it fast enough while speaking aloud, you make a noise previously only known to the muppets. Blogblogblogblog... The people at the table here are looking at me strange.

Anyway, day 2 was, for the most part, slower than the first. This was possibly due to the German beer consumed last night by a number of our party. Nevertheless, Cornelius arrived and took us to task on choosing names for things that are now needing a name. More to be announced once we give the affected internal community some chance for feedback.

Marketing Sprint Day 0; 1

Nov
13

Alright folks, so the KDE marketing juggernaut (subtle laughter) is meeting this weekend in Stuttgart. All 15 of us present are hard at work, bikeshedding with the best of them. Fortunately, when we take a break from discussion what shade of blue the bikeshed should be (because, obviously, it must be blue), we're actually getting some decent work done.

First and foremost, we had some food, providing a venue for pre-sprint arguments (purpose of marketing, targets for promotion materials, etc.) and learning of some Gerglish.
