Hey, I built KDE 4 overnight on my new Mandriva system, and while most of the pain was just in getting all the various -devel packages installed that I required for building, it seems that once those dependencies have been taken care of, everything went swimmingly. The only two things worth mentioning is that Captury/Capseo stuff doesn't have packages on Mandriva, but they build from sources well enough. Additionally, I have had to built qt-copy and shared-mime-info as part of my KDE 4 build user's installation since it was having trouble picking up those two from the system packages. Lastly, it appears that I'll have to recompile xinelib myself against XCB in order to get a functioning video widget at some point, but that's not a huge concern for me yet.
I also had to add a KDE4 entry to /usr/share/apps/kdm/sessions/ that allows me to go straight into KDE 4 from kdm. I'm wondering how much testing the KDE 4 kdm has gotten, since I'm assuming that most people are coming into the software from the kde 3x kdm, or from startx or some such. I haven't gotten around to trying the ported kdm yet.
That said, I am extremely excited after putting this build together. KWin Composite is perfectly smooth on the same hardware that was producing crappy results on Kubuntu, which makes me happy as I no longer have the noticeable frame lag when resizing, etc.
Also, Konq is now working pretty much as expected. Previously, I couldn't get gmail working, but it now functions as expected (still using Firefox user agent though, and keeping the CPU pretty warm when handling all that javascript), and I even notice that spell checking on the fly is once again enabled in my input boxes. I'm not sure if the plugin embedding is borked, but I can't get the flash plugin to work in this install. Not a big deal yet.
Strigi indexed my home folder, which meant it used some CPU for a few minutes. Since it was scanning the entirety of my KDE 4 source, build and install folders, it really didn't take that long. Unfortunately, since this is pretty much the only thing installed in this user account (and I'm not yet going to unlease it on the rest of my hard disk), the search results it gives me are not terribly useful. Or rather, it finds things that I'm looking for when searching for a specific term, but if I search for "aseigo", I get a bunch of source files that contain his email address. :P
I'm still getting the occasional program crash, but I'm feel comfortable enough to write this short entry in Konq. I have an itch to play with lancelot though, since Ivan is really tickling me with what he's doing over there. Oh well, I guess I should worry about tracking down bugs for 4.0 first before I start getting distracted. (Oh! my tail! *chases it*)
