Editorial Comment: What's the deal with tabs anyway...

I'm still not sure what the whole tabs buzz is about anyway. KDE users are asking for them in every application, from Amarok to KWin(?). I'm still not sure why tabs within applications are a good idea.

The taskbar has essentially been an implementation of bottom-of-the-screen tabs that has existed since win95. The problem is that it gets too full, or programmers don't give their windows good captions.

The modern user request for tabs are that each application essentially re-implement the taskbar internally. Seems wasteful. This just says that the taskbar is not doing its job well enough. I guess if there were decent advances with the taskbar, then tabs would be made even more redundant. (for example, imagine right clicking on the taskbar button for konq and being able to choose "New Window" - that sort of thing...)

Perhaps, since Plasma is in the works, we can create a taskbar that appears to the user as a tab widget to switch between applications. Then we can claim that KDE has invented a brand new technology that seamlessly allows tabs from many applications to mingle...

Oh, by the way, I think this might be my first post to the planet too... so: *waves*
