Hrmm, Ron sure was in a ranting mood today...
So for the last few weeks I've been working on a project to bring a new mail server together here at work. Basicly the old one is old.
So, we have a computer, and we're setting it up...
First thing we discover is that setting up and configuring sendmail is akin to having to eat an old XT (without salt, no less). In other words, it's hard. So we dumped sendmail in favour of postfix, which we set up in a matter of minutes (compared to sendmail's days of configuration).
Next, we migrated one of our internal domains over for testing... try it out: tester@oracomm.mb.ca. That's all fine and dandy now, and seems to running smoothly. Mass migration of all domains from the old server will take place one we do some more testing.
Most recently though, we decided we'd need to set up a new webmail interface to the computer. That's all fine and dandy too, except little did we know how hard this webmail was to set up... even for a pro at this software, it would take 3 hours to install.
So, I had to install and configure MySQL -- that in and of itself is a pain in the arse. It's on my list of 'Software that should never have been written' right beside sendmail, and a few others.
Then, I had to recompile php in order to add a few extensions that this software required. Pain in the arse to recompile and install -- and it wouldn't recognise MySQL! Well, after struggling with that for 2 hours, that's now up and running as well.
So, now I have a new webmail interface up and running -- has all the bells and whistles - can create filters, blacklist people, search for email addresses through a half dozen directory services... almost makes me giddy.
A few bugs to squash yet, but then it'll be ready to go.
Hrmm, I wonder how that thorn got lodged in my side...
