Odroid U2

May
12

So I've been on a build and experiment kick recently for a number of random projects. Over the holidays I built myself a vacuum chamber. It's fun putting things in there, but what I really want to do it manipulate things inside the chamber. I thought about a RPI board, but stumbled across something called an Odroid (while researching home theatre pc's that can run android).

State of limbo, and where to go next

Sep
01

Everyone once in a while, I get stuck in a state of limbo. I'm currently trying to finish up my M.Sc. and waiting for word from work on my next field deployment. This gives me time to think about where I want to be in 2 years, 5 years, etc. because, quite honestly, I'm bored and pass the time thinking up wild schemes. Where to begin...

Doctor Who et. al., and GPLing science

I should be getting work done. I have a paper that has a solid deadline of October 15th. Need to get it done soon - shouldn't be too hard really, after all it's just an extended form of the proceedings I presented at IWAGPR 2011 a few months ago. The problem is that it's boring - I'm basically expanding on the original proceedings to include more background information, and more data -- but because the copyright for the 5 page proceedings belongs to the IEEE, I cannot simply copy/paste blocks into the new paper.

Updating the archive

Aug
27

So after running this site for a few weeks now, I've finally gotten around to populating at least part of the archive. I have copied all of the relevant posts from my old livejournal account (troy-at-kde), which I had set up mostly for blogging about KDE related things. In fact, about 80% of the posts are strictly KDE related - this is due to the fact that it was syndicated to planetkde and people would get upset if I only blogged about schoolwork and such. Nevertheless, there is a decent mix of other information there, which I've now preserved for the immediate future.

Thunderstorm over London

Aug

So I brought my laptop inside at just the right moment... about 30 seconds before the downpour hit. Having procured myself a shiny new patio on front of this fine house, I decided that the best course of action was to ignore all the tornado warnings and go enjoy the show. Boy was I not disappointed. Now I return, soaked, strip and crawl into bed with the laptop to do some address updating. (See previous comment about new porch.)

Reclaiming my online independence

Aug

Recently I have decided that it's time to reclaim some of my online independence. It started with my thinking about facebook, my account there, and the amount of data that is shared there with or without my knowledge or approval.

Back in the blogging business

Jun
24

Well folks, after a hiatus of some significant time (something on the order of 18 months), I've finally gotten around to getting a blog set back up. I blame facebook. Once again, this blog, like it's predecessors, is oriented at being a scratch pad for ideas and commentary. Unlike my old blogs (which I will be adding to the archive for posterity, once I migrate them all), I will probably try to refrain from topics of religion, politics, or philosophy. More specifically, I'm trying to develop techniques useful for lunar resource exploration.
